Dam Synchronisation and Flood Release in the Zambezi River Basin

The concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) in river basins has been a key field in GTZ cooperation for many years. In its efforts to improve transboundary water management in the SADC region, the German and British Governments, through GTZ, support the Project on “Dam Synchronization and Flood Releases in the Zambezi River Basin” under the Transboundary Water Management Programme in SADC. The aim of this Project is the drafting of constructive recommendations for implementing water management measures in the basin to safeguard lives, livelihoods and the environment while giving room for further sustainable development with due regard to costs. The Contract for the Project was signed on the 17th November 2009 between GTZ and the SWRSD JV (SSI, WRNA, Rankin, SEED, Deltares Joint Venture) – hereafter referred to as „the Consultant‟. The duration of the Project is 14 months. This Inception Report has been prepared to provide the Client and stakeholders with a roadmap on the strategies and methodologies to be implemented in achieving the objectives of the Project, the proposed Outputs, foreseen challenges as well as an updated Work Plan.
