Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM)

The Governments of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa formalised the Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM) through the signing of the ‘Agreement for the Establishment of the Orange-Senqu Commission’ on November 3rd, 2000 in Windhoek, Namibia. ORASECOM was the first commission established following the regional ratification of the SADC Protocol on Shared Water Course Systems.
ORASECOM is mandated with promoting the equitable and sustainable development of the shared resources of the Orange-Senqu River. Its objectives are: to serve as a technical advisor to the member states on matters related to the development, utilisation and conservation of the water resources in the River System; and to perform other functions to the development and utilisation of the water resources as the member states agree.
Their objectives are:

ORASECOM developed an own Orange-Senqu River Awareness Kit (RAK) as an information and knowledge management tool for the Orange-Senqu River basin, to support capacity development and the sustainable management of the environment and resources within the basin.
