Zambezi River Basin

The Zambezi is the largest river in Southern Africa and its basin is shared by eight states. SADC has played a pivotal role coordinating and harmonising the policies and actions of the Member States with regard to all the transboundary rivers and particularly the Zambezi. The regional organization was also instrumental in all the efforts facilitating joint coordination of member states about their water management in the Zambezi basin. In the year 2004, the negotiations about a multilateral agreement establishing the Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM), were concluded.
