The International Center for Water Economics and Governance in Africa (IWEGA) was established in May 2009 at the University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is one of 15 centers of the Consultative Group on international Agriculture Research supported by the consortium of 64 governments as well as private, international and regional organizations.  The IFPRI mandate is to find sustainable solutions for ending poverty and hunger.

International Shared Aquifer Resource Management (ISARM)

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is one of 15 centers of the Consultative Group on international Agriculture Research supported by the consortium of 64 governments as well as private, international and regional organizations.

The Legal Pluralism & Integrated Water Resources Management initiative is a collaborative research project addresses plural legal systems in water resource management in southern Africa. 

ORI is a centre for the study and conservation of one of the world's largest and most intact inland wetland ecosystems -the Okavango Delta- as well as other southern African wetlands, riverbasins, watersheds and (since 2007) Kgalagadi drylands. The research institute was founded in response to plans to use the Okavango for a large scale water supply programme.

The RSSC Southern Africa will improve the capacities to provide sound science-based solutions for current problems and future risks in the region, in particular regarding climate change and the associated demands concerning land management practices of local players. To this end, the centre will contribute to strengthening existing and developing new capacities for application-oriented scientific research and science-policy consultations on climate change, adapted land-use and sustainable development in the region.

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is a policy institute that seeks sustainable solutions to the world’s escalating water crisis. SIWI manages projects, synthesises research and publishes findings and recommendations on current and future water, environment, governance and human development issues.

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council encourages collaboration among professionals addressing issues of water supply and sanitation for the poor.  The council also deals with the larger poverty issues such as health, environment and gender equality to name a few.  With members in more than 80 countries the council is at the forefront of knowledge and implementation of safe water and good sanitation.

AMCOW stands for the "African Ministers' Council on Water". Its membership presently consists of all African Ministers with responsibility for water resources. The mission of AMCOW is to provide political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources for sustainable social and economic development and maintenance of African ecosystems and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation to address the water and sanitation issues in Africa

The overall objective of the Department of Water Affairs is to assess, plan, develop and maintain water resources for domestic, agricultural, commercial, industrial and other uses in Botswana. In order to provide effective leadership for water resources planning, development and management, the department will assist and advises in the formulation of water resources development and management policies.

The French Water Partnership (FWP) was created on 22 March 2007, on the occasion of World Water Day and following the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico City in 2006, with the aim of helping to meet the global challenge of water and sanitation for all in the 21st century. The FWP is present on the international stage with its partners from other countries, in order to propose concrete solutions and promote their inclusion in water policies.

ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of local governments as well as national and regional local government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. Over 1000 cities, towns, counties, and their associations worldwide comprise ICLEI's growing membership. 

The Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, supported by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, acts as the public trustee of the nation's water resources. Within the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Directorate Water Quality Management and the various Regional Offices are jointly responsible for the governance of Water Quality in South Africa.

SADC Parliamentary Forum

The South African River Health Programme (RHP) primarily makes use of biological indicators (e.g. fish communities, riparian vegetation, aquatic invertebrate fauna) to assess the condition or health of river systems. The rationale for using biological monitoring is that the integrity of biota inhabiting river ecosystems provides a direct, holistic and integrated measure of the integrity or health of the river as a whole.

Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA)

The United Nations Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program site provides information about its efforts to channel financial and technical aid to NGOs and CBOs for sustainable projects with a focus on conserving the environment and enhancing people’s livelihoods and well-being. The Small Grants Program focuses on supporting GEF priority areas such as biodiversity, prevention of land degradation and the abatement of climate change.

Poverty reduction is an important element of German government overall policy, which is guided by the principle of sustainable development. Development policy is formulated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The German government has defined ten priority areas for action on poverty reduction which it is pursuing both in its bilateral relations and in its involvement at the European level and in international institutions. This includes ensuring access to vital resources and fostering an intact environment.

We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The conservation and protection of international waters such as rivers, lakes, aquifers, seas, and oceans requires international cooperation. These waters are home to diverse ecosystems and are sources of drinking water, food, energy and income for local communities. Competition for these resources is extremely high and their mismanagement can cause conflict.

USAID is the principal U.S. agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. USAID work supports long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting: (i) economic growth, agriculture and trade; (ii) global health; and, (iii) democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance. The African Centre for Water Research (ACWR) is an independent research and capacity building organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa. The International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO) and its regional branch in Africa (ANBO) proposed to develop and field-test Performance Indicators adapted to the design and monitoring of the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) principles in African Transboundary basins.

The Environment Conflict & Cooperation (ECC) platform is a way to exchange information about the environment, cooperation and conflict.  The platform aims to create partnerships among stakeholders in different sectors in order to promote sustainable peace.

Global Change Impacts on the Water Cycle in the Elbe River Basin

Water governance is a significant feature of international development policymaking. There is an increasing consensus on the need for improved water governance to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

FAO's "Information Products for Nile Basin Water Resource Management" project has established modern hydrological monitoring and reporting systems across the Nile Basin, helped government authorities harmonize data-gathering, and produced a series of comprehensive surveys of water use and agricultural production.

The ICA Water Platform (WP) was established in 2011 and is championed by Germany, which provides financial support and an infrastructure expert to supervise implementation of WP activities. The WP facilitates active cooperation and matchmaking between ICA Members, key African stakeholders and the private sector, including regular dialogue leading to joint investment activities.

The IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI) has worked with 80+ partner organizations across the world to demonstrate water management that supports healthy rivers and communities. A toolkit series has been developed under WANI:

The purpose of the Regional Environmental Education (EE) Programme is to enable environmental education practitioners in the SADC region to strengthen environmental education processes for equitable and sustainable environmental management choices. This will be achieved through enhanced and strengthened environmental education policy, networking, resource materials, training capacity, and research and evaluation.

The World Commission on Dams is an independent and international commission, established in May 1998, which presented its findings on November 16 2000. Its objectives are to undertake a global review of the development effectiveness of large dams and to develop internationally acceptable criteria and guidelines for future decision-making on dams.

WaterNet - Capacity building in water resources managment for Africa

The World Water Council (WWC) is an international multi-stakeholder platform for a “Water Secure World”.  In addition to being the driving force behind the World Water Forum meetings, WWC also publishes the Water Policy Journal.

This website is the pilot for the SADC Water Information Sharing Hub (SWISH) project, for the SADC Water Division and the GIZ Transboundary Water Management in SADC programme. The intention of this project is to support and facilitate the sharing of information (defined for the project as documents, calendars, contact information and glossaries) in the SADC Water Sector. The project is intended to support the objectives of the SADC Protocol on Shared Watercourses, as revised (2000), and, the objectives of the RSAP2.

The Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM) promotes the equitable and sustainable development of the resources of the Orange-Senqu River. ORASECOM provides a forum for consultation and coordination between the riparian states to promote integrated water resources management and development within the basin.

With increasing evidence that climate variability and change are impacting on water and associated resources worldwide, the countries of the region have found it imperative to jointly manage the resources of the basin. As a result, the International Commission for the Congo-Oubangui-Sangha Basin, (CICOS), was created in 1999 by Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo.

The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) works to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of waters and freshwater resources in the Danube River Basin. The work of the ICPDR is based on the Danube River Protection Convention, the major legal instrument for cooperation and transboundary water management in the Danube River Basin.

The Permanent Joint Technical Commission (PJTC) is an advisory body established to consult the respective governments on the development of the Kunene River and to oversee the implementation of common infrastructure projects.

The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) was established by the governments of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia. The LTA promotes regional cooperation required for socio-economic development and sustainable management of the natural resources in the Lake Tanganyika basin.

Information-Portal of the Mekong River Commission (MRC)

The Pangani River drains the southern side of Africa's greatest mountain (Mt Kilimanjaro) as well as its neighbour (Mt Meru) and a large part of the Pare and Usambara Mountains of the famous Eastern Arc chain in Tanzania.

Guided by the spirit of managing the Okavango River Basin as a single entity, the three sovereign states of Angola, Botswana and Namibia agreed to sign the "OKACOM Agreement" in 1994, in Windhoek, Namibia. The Agreement commits the member states to promote coordinated and environmentally sustainable regional water resources development, while addressing the legitimate social and economic needs of each of the riparian states.

Southern African Development Community, Water Division

The Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) is a bi-national company formed in 1993 through the treaty on the Development and Utilization of the Water Resources of the Komati River Basin signed in 1992 between the Kingdom of Swaziland and the Republic of South Africa. The purpose of KOBWA is to implement Phase 1 of the Komati River Basin Development Project.

The European Commission funded LoGo Water project supported local governments in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region to actively engage in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The map and atlas is a general hydrogeological map providing information on the extent and geometry of regional aquifer systems. The map is intended to serve as a base map for hydrogeologists and water resource planners, whilst at the same time presenting information to non-specialists.

The purpose of the Regional Environmental Education (EE) Programme is to enable environmental education practitioners in the SADC region to strengthen environmental education processes for equitable and sustainable environmental management choices. This will be achieved through enhanced and strengthened environmental education policy, networking, resource materials, training capacity, and research and evaluation.
